Welcome to the work of Judy Schavrien, painter and poet.
I have been making portraits for decades, often returning to the same people—especially women in their own right. There are still too few of these in the canon. I am interested in what time does to a face and how what passes for likeness keeps changing along with the sitter, the painter, and the relationship between them.
The first collection, There’ll Be No Dying Here: Portraits Through Time, assembles a number of such portraits, moving from young to old. Next comes Everything Voluptuous: The Love Songs 1970–2015, which samples poems of love and loss.
Elsewhere on the site are published writings about poets and poet-dramatists—Shakespeare, Aeschylus, and Bashō—along with videos and selections from earlier art books, including The New Ancient Greeks.
