In the book There'll Be No Dying Here, I paired Richard and Alessandra because of who they had become—and who I had become. Richard's pose had the geometric solidity of Khafre, the Egyptian pharaoh, extending him beyond ordinary space and time. On the other hand, he remained unmistakably Richard. Alessandra had grown up in several cultures; my aging eyes saw her, too, as extended into abstraction—her global sophistication, my own long-shot view.
